Diesel Particulate Filter DPF Cleaning and Removal – Scunthorpe Lincolnshire Yorkshire
Where do I go to get my DPF filter sorted? The most dreaded of all warning lights maybe, the DPF or Diesel Particulate Filter warning light, indication of DPF cleaning or, worse still a full replacement DPF? These can be expensive on any make of vehicle, so cleaning or replacing a faulty DPF filter on a used Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar and other marques is a sensible option to take. Exactly what is a DPF diesel particulate filter and what do they do? What does it mean when a DPF dash warning light comes on and what can you do about it?
What is a DPF Diesel Particulate Filter and Can A DPF Filter Be Cleaned or Repaired?
A DPF is basically a soot trap for carbon exhaust emissions from diesel engined cars. Diesel Particulate Filters have been fitted to most diesel cars for 20 years now, but still remain shrouded in mystery to most people, that is until the dreaded warning light appears on the dash warning system that triggers frantic Googling and phone calls. Most of the time the result of the research is pretty heart breaking.
A DPF only has a defined capacity for this soot and periodically it is burned off during driving which regenerates the diesel particulate filter.
How and Why Does A DPF Become Blocked?
The main culprit for DPF Diesel Particulate Filter blockages are short town journeys at low speeds, which is one of the reasons that diesel cars are becoming more scarce in city centres. Boor servicing schedules also reduce the lifespan of a DPF, which is usually well over 100,000 miles. Also the wrong choice of oil can actually cause soot build up in your Diesel Particulate Filter.
Some performance enhancements can cause damage to a DPF, as can running the car low on fuel over sustained periods, tricking the car into thinking that it cannot perform a DPF regeneration as there is insufficient fuel in the car to allow this. The warning light on the dash is the first sign of DPF blockage.
What Can I do To Maintain and Clean / Fix a DPF?
Firstly it is illegal to remove a DPF, with potential fines over £1,000 for anyone found doing this. So what are the solutions to a blocked DPF?
There are 2 types of DPF maintenance. One is a sustained level of motorway driving, ideally between 30 and 50 minutes which raises the exhaust and DPF temperature thus allowing the car to burn off its soot, usually when the DPF is around 45% capacity. This is fine but many drivers simply do not travel for over 30 minutes on a motorway often enough, if at all. manufacturers are aware of this and cars have a built in DPF active regeneration mode which effectively pumps in more fuel at DPF 45% level to increase the temperature inside the Diesel Particulate Filter that in turn burns off the soot. Sometimes though the journey is not long enough for this process to take place, and the DPF continues to be blocked.
So What Happens If The DPF Filter Warning Light Stays On?
Critically, do not ignore it as this can lead to more costly options to fix. Forced cleaning of a DPF works more often than not and is a relatively inexpensive option to clear a blocked Diesel Particulate Filter. Ignoring the status can increase vehicle emissions and in some cases cause the car to move to limp home mode until the issue is rectified. One other critical point is that a car with a blocked DPF will fail it’s MoT. With DPF filters costing between £1,000 and £3,500 each, cleaning a diesel particulate filter is well worth a try.
